In a short answer,
1) Individual who are heterozygous for inversions are often said to produce supergene complexes in the area of the inversion. Why?
2) A synonymous mutation occurs in an exon that is part of the gene for TAS2R38 in human. (1) Has a new allele been created? (2) Does the mutation have a phenotypic effect?
3) Unequal crossing over often results in the formation of duplicate copies of existing genes. At what phase of meiosis con unequal crossing over occur, and why does this happen?
Solution
1: Since heterozygote for inversion carries one chromosome with normal sequence and other with inverted genes, it forms the loop for pairing during zygotene. This locks the inkage groups with in the loop. Since these genes present in the inverted are inherited together, they are called as supergene.
