Which of the following statements regarding the plasma membrane is false?
A. the plasma membrane incorporates lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates
B. the plasma membrane is relatively flexible and can readily change shape
C. the opening or closing of protein channels can change the plasma membrane permeability
D. the plasma membrane can be used to store energy in the form of electrical and/or chemical gradients
E. none are false, i.e. all of the above are true
Solution
E. None are false i.e. all the above are true
The plasma memembrane is lipid bilayer made of proteins and carbohydrates, it is flexible due to lipids. Charged ions like sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride ions cannot cross membrane by simple diffusion but need specialised proteins. Protein channels are very selective and will accept only one type of molecule to transverse. The electrical and chemical gradients across membrane is caused by charge difference and by concentration difference of ions across the membrane respectively
