In the photoelectric effect incident light caused electrons
In the photoelectric effect, incident light caused electrons to be ejected from a metal. Explain how you measured the maximum kinetic energy of the electrons. Include a statement in words, not equations, of the definition of an electron-Volt.
Solution
The photons hit the metal surface and give some energy to an electron. Some energy is used to eject the electrons from their bonds to the metal. This is energy work function. Denoted by phi of the metal. Remaining energy is used as kinetic energy of the released electron.
KKE =eVo = hf- phi=( hc/lamda)- phi
Electronvolt definition: work done on an electron in accelerating it through potential difference of one volt. It is unit of energy.
