There are two types of test data and consequently different types of analysis. Parametric data has an underlying normal distribution which allows for more conclusions to be drawn as the shape can be mathematically described. Anything else is non-parametric.

Parametric methods are those for which we know that the population is approximately normal, or we can approximate using a normal distribution after we invoke the central limit theorem.

Non Parametric methods are statistical techniques for which we do not have to make any assumption of normality for the population we are studying.
