Water in the reservoir flows through the 0.2-m-diameter pipe at A into the turbine. The discharge at B is 0.5 m^3/s. The turbine runs with an efficiency of 65%, and there is a head loss of 0.5 m through the pipe. Determine the power output of the turbine.

Solution

Power Output from a Water Turbine:

From the Picture Available head : H = 20m

Flow rate Q = 0.5m3/Sec = 500 lit/Sec

Head loss thru pipe : 0.5m,

Actual head available: 20-0.5= 19.5m

Efficiency of the turbine: 65% = 0.65

Power = Head x Flow x Gravity x Efficiency = 19.5m x 500 lit/se x 9.81 x0.65 = 62170 Watts = 62.17kW.

The mechanical power output of turbine is not the actual capacity of the power plant. Further Energy lost in converting the mechanical energy into electrical energy (electricity) need to be taken into account.
