Which subunit of RNA polymerase II resembles the alpha subunit of RNA polymerase? What is the evidence for this match?
Solution
Eukaryotic RNA Polymerase II contains 12 subunits of which Rpb13 and Rpb11 together form a heterodimer which functionally resembles the alpha subunit of prokaryotic RNA polymerase. Their function is to recognise promoter region. The presence of same but unique, conserved sequence and structural motifs (which are known for their specificity to the promoter) at the C-terminal ends of these subunits provides the evidence .
