You are discussing wireless network security with a small business customer and state that disabling the DHCP server on his internal network would improve wireless security. How does this work?

A. This prevents anyone making a covert connection to the customer’s wireless network from automatically receiving an IP address and being able to join the network.

B. This prevents anyone from being able to use hostname–to–IP address translation covertly on your wireless network, so they can’t access Internet hosts by their domain names.

C. This prevents anyone from seeing the SSID of your network, so when malicious people are searching for wireless networks to compromise, they won’t be able to “see” your wireless network.

D. Disabling DHCP does nothing to improve wireless network security.

Solution

A. If an unauthorized person is able to “see” your wireless network and establish a connection, they still won’t be able to access your local network or the Internet unless they can acquire a valid IP address on your network. If you disable the DHCP server, the rogue computer won’t be able to automatically receive an address assignment. Keep in mind that if you disable the DHCP server, you must manually configure each of your computers with an IP address.
