It is attached at a horizontal distance of about 2.5 cm from the TMJ. If this muscle exerts a force of 222 N when you bite, what is the force your incisors exert? The horizontal distance from the TMJ to your incisors is 6.6 cm. Assume that both forces are vertical.

Solution

The forces are parallel and perpendicular to the hirozontal distance form TMJ.

Apply Principle of moment:

F1r1 = F2r2

Thus, the force exert by incisors is,

F2 = F1r1/r2 = (222 N)(2.5 cm) / 6.6 cm = 84.09 N
