Which solutions has a higher concetration of hydrogen ions H
Which solutions has a higher concetration of hydrogen ions (H+) vinegar, pH 2.8 or coffee, pH 5.5? Why? How would you find out which one has a higher concetration based on this information?
Solution
Answer: vinegar solution has more hydrogen ions than coffee. The lesser the pH of the solution, the acidic it is. The more acidic the solution, the more it will have hydrogen ions.
CONCENTRATION OF HYDROGEN IONS IN VINEGAR WITH PH OF 2.8:
Number of hydrogen ions = 10 to the power of –pH
=10 to the power of -2.8
=0.00158489319
= 1.58 * 10 to the power of -3
CONCENTRATION OF HYDROGEN IONS IN COFFEE WITH PH OF 5.5:
Number of hydrogen ions = 10 to the power of –pH
=10 to the power of -5.5
=0.00000316227
=3.16 * 10 to the power of -6
