Calculate the amount of genetic diversity in each of the pop

Calculate the amount of genetic diversity in each of the populations below, using the formula gene diversity = expected heterozygosity = 1 – p2, with p2 summed across all alleles (e.g.= 1 – (p2 + q2 + r2)) A1, A2, A3, A4 are alleles for the same gene.

Population 1:

Frequency A1 = 0.01

Frequency A2 = 0.79

Frequency A3 = 0.15

Frequency A4 = 0.05

Population 2:

Frequency A1 = 0.3

Frequency A2 = 0.4

Frequency A3 = 0.3

Which population was calculated as having the higher level of genetic diversity? Explain. What factors are taken into account in measuring the extent of genetic diversity?

Solution

Genetic diversity of population 1:

= 1 – p1 = 1-[A1A2 + A1A3+ A1A4 + A2A3+ A2A4+ A3A4]

= 1- [0.01x0.79+ 0.01x0.15 + 0.01x0.05+ 0.79x0.15 + 0.79x0.05 +0.15x0.05]

=1-[0.0079+ 0.0015 + 0.0005 + 0.1185 + 0.0395 + 0.0075]

=1-[0.1754]= 0.8246

From above procedure, the factors are clearly indicating which are considering for calculating genetic diversity.
