A light ray travels from a vacuum to a material with n 133

A light ray travels from a vacuum to a material with n = 1.33 with an angle of incidence of 45 degrees. What is the angle of refraction?

Solution

Index of refraction of the material n = 1.33

Index of refraction of vacuum n \' = 1

Angle of incidence i = 45 o

Angle of refraction r = ?

From Snell\'s law , sin i / sin r = n / n \'

                        sin 45 / sin r = 1.33 / 1

                                           = 1.33

                                    sin r = sin 45 /1.33

                                           = 0.7071 /1.33

                                           = 0.5316

    from this r = sin -1 (0.5316)

                    = 32.11 o
