Ch 3 R 1 Gregor Mendel used peas in his experiments for all

Ch. 3 R

1. Gregor Mendel used peas in his experiments for all of the following reasons EXCEPT:
A. he could grow the plants all year in northern Europe.
B. he had a number of strains with obviously different traits.
C. he could count a large number of experimental results.
D. he could control the fertilization.
E. Actually, all of these were important reasons to use peas.

Solution

1.

Gregor Mendel performed hybridization experiments on approximately 29,000 pea plants. The idea behind choosing this plant for his experiments was that they had easily noticeable traits and there were around 7 traits of which he was able to manipulate. He chose pea because it was available to form the seed merchants and could be easily studied and analyzed. The second reason is that peas are able to self-pollinate or cross-pollinate.

However, the disadvantage he faced was he could not grow the pea plants throughout the year in northern Europe. The ideal germination temperature for them is 40 to 85 F and optimum being 75 F. hence, option (a) is the correct answer.

2.

A heterozygote refers to an individual who consists of two different alleles of a certain gene or genes and this gives rise to different offspring. Hence, option (c) is correct.

3.

A monohybrid cross refers to the mating between two organisms that have different variations at a particular genetic chromosome of interest. The characters that being studied in a monohybrid cross is governed by multiple variations for a single locus. It is also referred to the breeding between the organisms that differ in a single provided trait. Hence, option (d.) is correct.

4.

Punnett square is a diagram that is obtained to predict the result of a certain cross or breeding experiment. These are tables that are used to evaluate the genotypic result probabilities of the offspring of a single allele or can be when multiple alleles from the parents are being examined. Therefore, it is not filled to represent the meiosis and hence option (b.) is correct.
