Check your Understanding Critical Thinking and Application concentration should increase 1 Your lab partner with you that if you add acid to a solution, the hydrogen ion Concentration should increase and, therefore, the pH should Increase. Is he correct? What you do you tell him? 2 A hypothetical drug binds all of the buffer molecules in the blood, effectively removing them from circulation. Predict what will happen to the pH of the blood if hydrogen ions are added to it. 3 You take the boiled lipase from Exercise 2-3 and compare its structure to the normal, unboiled lipase. You note that the two structures differ Why are they different? How does this help to explain your results?

Solution

1) when acid especially strong acid is added to a solution or eater then concentration of hydrogen ion increases but there is no increases in pH because the increased number of H+ ions binds with neutral water molecule and forms hydronium ion i.e. H3O+ ion.

Example- HCl+H2O=H3O+ + Cl-

Since,pH is equal to negative logarithm of H3O+ ion, thus with increases in hydronium ion there is reduction in the pH of final solution making the solution acidic.

2) in absence of buffer especially bicarbonate buffer system even a slight increase in the hydrogen ion will drastically effect the blood pH making it more acidic and resulting in acidosis. The kidney will start adding bicarbonate ion and lungs will start increasing the removal of carbon dioxide from the blood in order to maintain the blood\'s pH of 7.4. hence the breathing process will increase and work load on kidney will also increase.

3) on boiling lipase thermal unfolding of lipase occurs whic destroys the secondary and tertiary structure of enzyme leaving it in denatured form with reduced activity. The vander wall bonds, bonds between the amino acids present in different chain of an enzyme are broken and unfolding
