You have a customer who wants you to enable RAID 5 on his computer using SATA or eSATA. What do you tell him?

A. You can install a SATA RAID 5 controller.

B. You can install an eSATA RAID 5 controller.

C. You can install either a SCSI RAID 5 controller or a SATA RAID 5 controller but not an eSATA RAID 5 controller.

D. You can install a PATA RAID 5 controller or an eSATA RAID 5 controller but not a SATA RAID 5 controller.

Solution

RAID 5: THIS ARRAY REQUIRES AT LEAST THree internal drives, but it distributes data on all drives while keeping the array safe against the failure of one. THough a single drive failure won\'t result in the loss of any data, performance will suffer until you replace the broken device. still, because it balances storage space , performance, and data safety, RAID 5 is the preferred setup.

eSATA Or External SATA

SATA is the interface standard for connecting internal drives to a computer\'s motherboard. eSATA allows this interface to work from outside the computer, Similar to USB orFireWire. eSATA allows for the same speed as SATA, which currently caps at 6Gbps. Though it\'s very fast, eSATA is not universally

available. most of the time you\'ll need an add-in card to support this standard. There is only one type ofeSATA cable, with both of its ends the same.

SCSI RAID 5 controller

#) The controller based hardware solution DPT\'s SCSI controllers are a good example for a controller based RAID Solution. The intelligent controller manages the RAID subsystem independently from the host. the advantage over an external SCSI---SCSI RAID subsystem is that the controller is ble to span the RAID subsystem over multiple SCSI channels and by this remove the limiting factor external RAID Solutions have : The transfer rate over the SCSI bus.

The MD driver in the LInux kernel is an example of a RAID solution that is completely hardware independent.

Every OS needs its own special driver for this type of RAID solution, this is error prone and not very compatible.

Hardware arrays are highly fault tolerant. ince the array logic is based in hardware ,software is not required to boot.
