Question 2- You are designing the portal cap for an emergency fire escape chute. However, space is a concern. To conserve space while still making sure people will fit, unlike the photo to the right, the portal entrance will be rectangular rather than circular. You want to design the chute entrance (the hole that the top) such that 99% of US males will be able to fit without hitting their shoulders or abdomen (the assumption being that US females are smaller) 2a What dimensions would you use for your design? 2b Assuming the dimensions are independently distributed, what dimensions for the portal would you use (assume different length and breadth dimensions)?

Solution

2a) Avarage US male waist circumference is 99.4 cm , assume nearly 100 cm. we can use 50 x 35 cm rectangular portal entrance

2b) 42 x 35 cm rectangular portal. the diagonal of this rectangle is 54.5 cm. Most of circular chute has 54 cm dia. So we can use this rectangle portal chute.
