Some neurons are innervated by many other neurons. Whether the post-synaptic neuron will achieve a threshold action potential or not may be determined by the summation of the action potentials received at any given time from the individual pre-synaptic neurons. This is called spatial summation.

Spatial summation is defined as sensory summation that involves stimulation of several spatially separated neurons at the same time ¹.
