1.) Which macronutrient do we consume in large amounts, but which we don\'t use for energy stores?

a.) Lipid

b.) Protein

c.) Carbohydrate

d.) Minerals

2.) There are no essential _________.

a.) amino acids

b.) fatty acids

c.) carbohydrates

d.) minerals

e.) vitamins

Solution

1). b). Protein

Proteins are taken in large quantities but are not used as direct energy stores. The primary function of proteins is not energy production, they are the structural elements of muscles and many other cellular structures. In the absence of carbohydrates and lipids, proteins are breakdown to derive energy.

We generally take carbohydrates in higher quantities, excess glucose is stored as glycogen. But glycogen is not the long term energy storage because glucose is water soluble. Lipids are water-insoluble and they serve as long-term energy stores.

2). c.) carbohydrates

Essential nutrients are those that must be taken through food to meet the body\'s metabolic requirements. No particular carbohydrate is considered essential.
