1) what is it that allows the top of a cup to actually sink below the surface of water before the water actually pours into the cup?
We did an experiment where we put pennies in a styrofoam cup that was floating in a tub of water. We wanted to see how many pennies it took for it to sink but there was a point where the cup was below the surface but water wouldn\'t poor in so that\'s what this question is about.
2) what could you do to minimize this effect
Thank you :)
Solution
1 ) Surface tension is that allows the cup edge to appear below the water\'s surface.
2) surfactant(surface tension softening agent) is used to minimize this effect. Ex: ethanol , fatty alcohol ethoxylates
