An isothermal process is a process for which there is no heat transfer
True or False ?
Solution
In Isothermal process the change of temperature with any instant remains constant. But ther will be heat transfer taking place. If we consider a quasi static process where the expansion of the gas in cylinder takes place slowly when the whole weight on the piston is converted into small weights and taken away from the top of the piston slowly hence the heat transfer from the cylinder to surroundings takes very slowly without the change of temperature. Hence isothermal process is very slow process. Due to constant temperature consistency the internal energy of the system doesnt change. Hence according to second law of thermodynamics the total heat transfer of the system is converted into work done hence we can say that there will be no heat transfer.
