A block-and-tackle system is designed so that pulling one end of a rope seven feet will move a weight on the other end a distance of five feet. If x represents the distance the rope is pulled, express the distance the weight moves in terms of x.
Solution
Pulling one end of a rope seven feet will move a weight on the other end a distance of five feet.
Rate of weight movement = distance by which weight moves/( distance by which rope moves)
= 5/7
So,if a rope moves by x distance weight moves by (5/7)x
general function : weight moves = 5x/7
