Skin color is a quantitative gene trait means it is controlled by many responsible genes rather than 1 or 2 genes. It follows a variation in the form of bell shaped curve (Normal distribution) from fair skin to darker skin. There could be several possible reasons and minor variation in genes of population groups across different parts of globw which per say are driven by non pathogenic SNPs single nucleotide polymorphisms. furthermore, one possible mechanism that could be thought of is evolutionary adaptation to amount of insolation (suns radiation recieved in a population over time. Speaking genetically the colour of skin is attributed to melanin protien and relative differences in colours amoung populations could be attriburted to amount of melanin produced in the cells of indidual population determined by change in gene promoter sequence of melanin over evolutionary time , that ultimately decided the amount of melanin produced differing even though if number of cells are roughly the same ...
