Question: What kind of bacteria/microbe have a higher chance to invade vaginal microbial community? How can you test this (experimental designs)?
Solution
Ans.) Vaginal microflora has a mutualistic relationship with their host and has major impact on health and unwellness. Healthy women have several different kinds of bacteria that are typically dominated by genus Lactobacillus, for example L. crispatus found in vaginal area. These bacteria produce lactic acid which protect against infection by other pathogenic microorganism. It inhibit in vitro growth of pathogenic microorganisms. The population of the vaginal microflora is managed by the low pH along with the lactic acid production by lactobacilli. Other bacterial species are also frequently found in the vagina; Gram positive cocci: Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., and Bacteroides spp., and Gram-negative enteric organisms, such as Escherichia coli.
Nugent Gram-stain test is the preferred diagnostic test for this. It is carried out by self-collected vaginal smears.
