A ship leaves port at noon and has a bearing of S 27° W. The ship sails at 15 knots. (a) How many nautical miles south and how many nautical miles west will the ship have traveled by 6:00 P.M.?(b) At 6:00 P.M., the ship changes course to due west. Find the ship\'s bearing and distance from the port of departure at 7:00 P.M. (Round your answers to one decimal place.)

Solution

at 6 PM the ship has sailed = 15* 6 = 90 nautical miles

therefore, sin 27 = x / 90

a)   x = sin 27* 90 = 40.85 nautical miles west ship has travelled by 6 PM

cos 27 = y / 90

y = 80.19 nautical miles south ship has travelled by 6 PM
