The drawbacks of using Information Technology are having a negative effect on Caribbean people
it will be better if i talk about social media because the negative impact of IT on Caribbean people is mainly because of social media
Social media exists since a long time. Sites like Myspace , Hi5 dominae the world of social media for some time in the past years. It is only in recent years that the effects of social media whether on teensagers, business , celebrities or any body else has been given special attention. Of course, this is due to the s popularity of current social networking sites like Facebook,Twitter. Facebook and Twitter have become a part of modern life, particularly for teensagers. So what are the impacts of this, especially for us in the Caribbean? What are the effects of social media or information technology on youth in the Caribbean?
Firstly, with no doubt, the use of social media in the Caribbean is largely focussed to the use of Facebook and Twitter. Still there are many other social networking sites in use but Facebook and Twitter are the most popular among all. These sites allow peop;e to interact with each other and are where all age groups are spending a lot of their free time. So, what kind of an impact is all that time spent over technology instead of in person having on today’s Caribbean youth?
Social networking sites are where teensagers basically socialize and where they connect to each other. They do not have the numerous places to ‘hang out’ like their parents did as they dont have enough time. Social media allows them to reconnect in a comfortable and relax manner. Social media encourages teensagers to connect with each other and to express their feeling and creativity too. They also provide an opportunity to learn , and are a way for teensagers to access information. The problem is this, is this form its all-encompassing?
Caribbean people are social media loving people. Social interaction are important marks of Caribbean people. With the largely uncontrollable social interaction of teenagers, will it not be a short spanof time before the real definition of “social” changes? Stressing social connection and interaction among teensagers is one of the most critical functions of Caribbean society.
Technology is what goes on in the real world. Bullying was before the Internet, but cyber bullying makes it even easier as it isn’t face to face situations. Moreover, children seem to be open to experiments and push boundaries. This includes sending, receiving or forwarding sexually explicit photographs, messages, or images.
Another worry is that, when teens spend too much time on social media sites, they may begin to show signs of depression, such as sleep and eating habits, mood swings, spending time with different “friends” or becoming totally socially isolated.
Parents, teachers and professionals should help educate children and young adults on balancing the interney world and the real world; and on how to be more social media literate, so that they can understand and expose the types of things to which they are exposed.
