Solution

I am assuming that you are speaking about it from a production perspective because that part deals with the mechanical engineering aspect of it. So, let me outline every component of railway system and the manufacturing processes involved in it.

Tracks or Rails: These are long I-section beams that are laid out in parallel. They are made out of cast iron. They are hot rolled from slabs of iron. They are locked to the lower cement or wood sleepers using bolts or locks which are bent in the right shape from bars of iron. These tracks are joined and welded on spot using thermit welding.

Locomotive: There are two types of locomotives. It is either diesel or electric locomotives. These pull the train of cars to long haulages. They have a chassis which is made of hot rolled C-section pipes. Onboard, you may have a diesel generator or you may get a feed from the electric wires on the top. The upper part is the positive terminal whereas the rails is actually the negative terminal. The generator or the overhead wires provide electric supply to the on-board electric motor which drives the wheels. All the huge parts such as the wheels, the suspension arm, the shaft are cast. These are too tedious to make and hence have an infinite lifecycle over which they are recycled. There is also an electric compressor or a vacuum guage which helps operate the horn, the brakes

Car or carriage: These are also body on frame and have a rolled chassis on top of which the car sits. The outside parts are made of sheet metal which is rolled and welded together. It is so strong that it can withstand an accident and still not even crumple an inch. Each car has it\'s own generator which is attached to the wheel. As the carriage moves, electricity is generated which charges up the batteries as well as supplies for all the connections inside the carriage. The brake lines are vacuum assisted and are supplied by the locomotive
