American Standard Channels or C shapes SI Units A beam is built-up by bolting two 15 times 250-mm steel plates to two C310 times 37 steel channels (see appendix B) as shown in the Figure. The beam will be 5-m long, is simply supported at its ends and carries a concentrated load of 125 kN at its center. What spacing of bolts is required if the bolts are to have a diameter of 20-mm and an allowable shearing stress of 140 MPa?

Solution

load = 125 kN

Dia of bolt is 20 mm

allowable shear stress = 140 MPa

let s be the spacing of bolts

length 5 m

the total shearing force is equal to the total shearing force exerted by bolts

F is the total shearing force and R is the resistant force R=F

140*4740*2=(125000/4740)*15*s

s=3362mm

3.3m

the spacing between the bolts is 3.3m
