What would happen if the blood supply to the osteon was cut
What would happen if the blood supply to the osteon was cut off?
Solution
Osteon consists of osteocytes and canaliculi they together surround the Haversian canal system which is the basic functional unit of a bone. Each osteon consists of concentric layers of lamellae (channels). The haversian canal is like the blood supply tank for the bones. Blood carries essential nutrients, blood cells( RBC\'s and WBC\'s) which are made in the bone marrow, immune cells and even dead cells as a matter of fact. In case of a cut in the blood supply to the osteon the essential calcium and potassium ions and other bone growth factors would not reach the bone thus hampering the bone growth.
