Guinardia are apparently extremely well adapted to growth in deeply mixed turbulent water, where cells are only intermitently exposed to high light levels. Akashiwo sanguine can develop quite quickly. Over time, as the bloom develops, competition from cryptomonads, which have a relatively high growth rate, can lead to shading of the A. sanguine, which can then shift to a predatory mode and ingest the competing cryptomonads.
