•A subject is pedaling at 75 rpms at a resistance setting of 2 kp on a Monark Cycle Ergometer for 15 minutes. What is the total work accomplished over the fifteen minute period?

Solution

Work = Resistance(Kp) * Revolutions per minute (rpm) * Fly wheel Travel distance ( m/rev)

Given Resistance = 2kp

Revolutions per minute = 75 rpm

For monark cycle ergometer fly wheel travel distance = 6 m/rev

There fore

work = 2 * 75 *6

         = 900 kg.m/minute

         = 150 watts             [ since 6kg.m / minute = 1 watt]

Since work is done for 15 minutes total work accomplished = (150) * (15*60 seconds)

                                                                                       = 1350000 watt seconds

Converting this to kilo calories we get

Total work accomplished = 1350000*0.000239

                                      = 322.65 kilo calories
