Relate the structure and function of chloroplast to the process of photosynthesis.

Solution

Answers:

Chloroplasts are double membrane bound organelle present in mesophyll cells of leaves. The chloroplasts usually align towards the periphery of mesophyll cells such that they can get maximum of the incident sunrays. The chloroplasts consists of the membranous grana, fluid stroma and stroma lamellae. The grana is responsible for trapping light energy and for the synthesis of energy rich ATP and NADPH. The carbon dioxide is fixed in the stroma leading to the synthesis of glucose, which in turn forms starch. The former set of reactions are called the light reactions. The reactions in the stroma are not directly light driven but are dependent on the products of the light reaction (ATP and NADPH). Hence. these set of reactions are called dark reactions.
