Let f be the piecewise defined function State the domain of the function. Find the function values, f(2). f(5)

Solution

a) Domain: ( -4 < x < 3) U [ 3 , 6 ]

b) f(2) for x=2 lies in f(x) = x-5

f(2) = 2-5 =-3

c) f(5) for x= 5 lies in f(x) = x^2

f(5) = 5^2 = 25

d) f(-3) for x=-3 lies in f(x) = x-5

f(-3) = -3-5 =-8

e ) f(3) for x =3 lies in f(x) = x^2

f(3) = 3^2 =9
