The hypotenuse (side C) of a triangle is 13 inches long. Which of the following pair measurements could be correct for the lengths of the other two sides of the B^2 = C^2)

Solution

2. In a right angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (C) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides ( A and B) i.e. C2 = A2 + B2 . Here, C = 13 so that C2 = 169. Also, 52 + 122 = 25 + 144 = 169. Therefore, the last answer 5inches, 12 inches is correct.

3. The first runner has a pace of 7 minutes per mile. He finishes the race in 28 minutes. Therefore, he runs 28/7 = 4 miles in 28 minutes. The second runner finishes the race in 30 minutes, i.e. he runs 4 miles in 30 minutes. Thus, his pace is 30/4 = 7.5 minutes per mile.
