The normal defense systems can fail under situation of metabolic disorders like diabetes which makes the immune system to be compromised. In such cases, the pathogens successfully invade the body to cause infections.

Under conditions of immune compromised state of immune system like AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) caused by HIV (Human immune deficiency virus). the opportuistic pathogens cause multiple infections at a time. For example, tuberculosis, cryptosporidiasis, mycoplasmal pneumonia and Kaposis sarcome are some common opportunistic infections caused in AIDS patients.

Under malignant and cancerous conditions, the mutations alter the function of normal proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes and allow them to become oncogenes causing cancers.The immune system totally becomes weak in malignant conditions and therefore, opportunistic infections harbor human body.
