Q1. Consider a process consisting of three activities:

Activity

Processing Time (Min./Unit)

1

2

3

60

30

40

What is the bottleneck? How much is the process capacity? How many units can be produced in a 24-hour day?

Suppose we have added extra machines to each activity as follows:

Activity

Processing Time (Min./Unit)

Number of Machines

1

2

3

60

30

40

3

2

2

What is the bottleneck now? How much is the process capacity? How many units can be produced in a 24-hour day?

Activity

Processing Time (Min./Unit)

Solution

Q1. The bottleneck is Activity 1 since it takes the most time among all activities.

Process capacity is the capacity of bottleneck process, Activity 1 processing time is 60 mins/unit, and hence process capacity is 1/hr or 24/day

The first unit will take 130 mins to complete, rest after that units will be produced at 60mins each. Thus production in a day = ((24*60) – 130)/60 +1 = approx. 22 units

Q2. Since we are adding machines effective processing time decreases

Activity 1 = 60/3 = 20 mins

Activity 2 = 30/2 = 15 mins

Activity 3 = 40/2 = 20 mins

Thus here bottleneck is activity that has highest processing time i.e. activity 1 and activity 2

Processing capacity = 60/20 = 3 per hour or 72 per day

Q1. The bottleneck is Activity 1 since it takes the most time among all activities.

Process capacity is the capacity of bottleneck process, Activity 1 processing time is 60 mins/unit, and hence process capacity is 1/hr or 24/day

Activity 1 = 60/3 = 20 mins

Activity 2 = 30/2 = 15 mins

Activity 3 = 40/2 = 20 mins

Thus here bottleneck is activity that has highest processing time i.e. activity 1 and activity 2

Processing capacity = 60/20 = 3 per hour or 72 per day

Processing capacity = 60/20 = 3 per hour or 72 per day
