A student in my negotiation class last semester had an offer
A student in my negotiation class last semester had an offer from a Wall Street investment banking firm. The student believed that this was a very good career opportunity. The student was not sure if he should ask for relocation expenses as he needed some cash to relocate nearer to NY city for ease of commute to work. He had no other offers and wanted to accept this offer. Should he negotiate with the investment banking firm for relocation expenses? How should he go about doing it?
Solution
The first thing the student should try and find out if the company has any such provisions or not in its policy by enquiring with the point of contact. If the company does not have a policy as such he can ask them if they could make an exception for him citing genuine reasons for the request. If the bank does not agree to it then the student can offer to repay the amount taken by him upfront in smaller installments later so that he does not face the burden of sudden cash outflow. However if the bank does not agree to any of his proposals maybe he will have to make an arrangement from else where.
