Find the total electric field (magnitude and direction) at eac of the following locations: a) at point P. 6.00 cm to the left of sheet 1; b) at point P\\ 6.00 cm to the right of sheet 1: c)at coordinate x. 6.00 cm of sheet 2 left.

Solution

For an infinite sheet, the field strength is independent of the distance and has magnitude

Left of sheet 1, the field from sheet 1 points to the left and from sheet 2 points to the right :

E_x = (5.00 - 3.00) C/m² / (2 * 8.854 10^-12 F/m)

E_x(P) = 1.12 * 10^5 N/C (positive, so to the right)

For the second point P\' (in between the sheets) we have

E_x(P\') = (3.00 + 5.00) C/m² / (2)
