DNA in the cell exist in the form of Chromosomes. These chromosomes are categorized into Autosomes and allosomes. X and Y chromosomes are allosomes or Sex chromosomes. Among sex chromosomes, Y chromosome show s uniparental inheritance I.e from father to son only, not to daughter.

Similarly mitochondrial DNA also uniparenta. I.e we got mitochondrial Dna only from mother.

So Y chromosome DNA and Mitochondrial DNA are used extensively for Ancestray studies
