Calculate value of rippling voltage on Capacitor 1 |C1|
Solution
The peak AC voltage out of the transformer is:
12.0*(2^0.5)=16.970 Volts Peak AC.
This passes through the rectifier converting it to a full-wave DC pulse voltage seen at the cap and load is:
Minus 2 diode forward voltage drops, 0.8*2=1.6 Volts DC:
16.970-1.6=15.370 Volts peak DC
We are given the load resistance of 100 ohms, so can calculate the needed load current that the cap must supply b/t pulses.
I(load)=15.370/100=0.1537 amps or 0.154 amps
The cap must supply for ideally (1/60 Hz)/2 =8.33 mSec, the ripple voltage is given:
C=I(dt/dv)=0.154(8.33 mSec/1 Vpp)=1283 uF
-------------
The DC output is ideally the average voltage over time of the observed waveform:
15.370-(1 Vpp/2) = 14.87 Volts DC
