Imagine that a relaxed sarcomere is 2.3 \\mum long and that a contracted sarcomere is 2.0 \\mum long. Imagine further that the thin filaments are 1.0 \\mum long and the thick filaments are 1.5 \\mum long. To the nearest hundredths, what is the difference between the overlap (overlap of one thin filament with the thick filament) that occurs in a contracted sarcomere and the overlap that occurs in a relaxed sarcomere?

Solution

Relaxed sarcomere :-

overlap distance :- 2.3 - ( 1.0/4 + 1.5/4 )

:- 2.3 - (0.25+0.37)

= 2.3 - 0.62

= 1.68

Contracted sarcomere

Overlap distance :- 2.0 - (1.0/2 + 1.5/2 )

= 2.0 - 1.25

= 0.75

Difference = 1.68 - 0.75

= 0.93 micrometer.

Imagine that a relaxed sarcomere is 2.3 \\mum long and that a contracted sarcomere is 2.0 \\mum long. Imagine further that the thin filaments are 1.0 \\mum long
