     Wood Construction Answer the following: A board exactly 12\" (305 mm) wide was quartersawn from a green softwood log, then seasoned to a moisture content of 12%. How wide is it now? Show calculations. How many board feet are contained in a 2times 4 stud 8\' long? If the stud costs $2.36, what is the cost per board foot? Show calculations. What will be the cost of 34 2times10 floor joists, each 12\' long, if the price of lumber is $385 per thousand board feet? Show calculations.

  Solution
A) In quartersawn board, all width shrinkage is in the radial direction.
From curve b/w moisture content and shrinkage:
at 12% moisturecontent,shrinkage = ~2.7%
Shrinkage = 12\" * .027 = 0.324\".
Final size: 12” – 0.324” = 11.676”.........Ans
B) 1x12 8’ long is equal to 8 board feet,
so, 2 x 4 stud 8\' long = (2\" x 4” / 12\"2) x 8’ = 5.33 board feet............Ans
Cost per board foot = $2.36/5.33 = $0.4425 per board foot...........Ans
C) Each 2x10: (2” x 10”/12\"2) x 12’ = 20 board feet
For 34 pieces, 20 board ft x 34 = 680 board feet
Price for (680 board feet / 1000) x $385.00 per thousand board feet = $261.80..........Ans
