5a- Define muscle fatigue (b) What happens to force if fused tetanus is maintained? And (c) Explain one possible cause of muscle fatigue.

Solution

A. Muscle fatigue is the decrease in ability of a muscle to generate force. It may be due to vigorous exercise but abnormal fatigue may be caused by barriers to or interference with the different stages of muscle contraction. Fatigue is a feeling of tiredness or exhaustion or a need to rest because of lack of energy or strength.Fatigue may result from overwork, poor sleep, worry, boredom, or lack of exercise.

B.  Tetanus is a sustained muscle contraction results when the motor nerve that innervates a skeletal muscle emits action potentials at a very high rate. This is generally observed during summation of muscle contraction. During tetanic contractions, muscles can shorten, lengthen or remain constant length. Prolonged tetany leads to Rigor mortis - caused by chemical changes in the muscles cause the limbs to stiffen.

C. Muscle fatigue is the decline in ability of a muscle to generate force. It can be a result of vigorous exercise but abnormal fatigue may be caused by barriers to or interference with the different stages of muscle contraction
