a) What is a Record and for what type of tables build is required?

b) Types of records and Naming conventions?

Solution

a. Record

A Record is a composite data structure used to store the data values of different kinds. It provided a high level of addressing and manipulating program based data and it comprises of different fields that are similar to the rows in database tables. The main advantages of using a record in database are Data abstraction and Aggregate operations.

Consider the example of Student is taken as a record, which have different fields like Name, Rol_Id, Percentage, Department, for each of these fields allows treating a Student as a logical unit and allows organizing and representing its information in an efficient way.

In SQL language access the fields by using a member accessing (.) operator. Must define attributed when we add a field to a record. Build is required for the System Catalog Tables, People Tools tables, Application Data Tables.

b.

Records are of three types. They are as follows:

Table based records:

The table based records or table record are extract from the list of columns of a table. Each field in the record corresponds to and has the same name as a column in the table. The table record always reflects the current structure that makes it useful.

Cursor based records:

A cursor-based record or cursor record is a record whose structure is drawn from the selected list of the cursor. Each field in the record corresponds to and has the same name as the column or aliased expression in the cursor\'s query.

User defined Records:

User defined Records or Programmer Records is a record type that allows defining a different record structures. It consists of different fields.

Naming conventions:

The Naming convention plays a major role for designing a database. These won’t affect the database performance and level of understanding. These records consistently and logically and in a predictable way to distinguish similar records from one another. These used to store or access the records or tables in a efficient way. There are some common rules to restrict the unexpected problems.

Some common rules are as follows:

Table names are always in plural form and underscore is allowed in table names.

All column names are in singular.

Primary Key or foreign key can define as Name_pk, Name_fk.

All check constraints are named.

If several tables contain columns with the same content use the same consistent column names.

To define the logical parts of an application prefix is used.
