1. Consider a reference angle (where the initial side of the angle is on the x-axis and vertex at the origin) of = 1 radian.
To four decimal places, what are the coordinates of the point on the unit circle that corresponds to that reference angle?
2. Suppose we consider the point (1/3 , y) on the unit circle.
a. What is the y-coordinate?
b. What is the corresponding reference angle?
c. What are the six trigonometric ratios of that reference angle? Give exact answers.
Solution
1. = 1 radian
Points corresponding this angle on unit circle are given by: x= 1*cos(1rad) =0.5403
y = 1*sin(rad) =0.8414
Coordinates are ( x, y) ---( 0.5403 , 0.8414 )
2. ( 1/3 , y) on unit circle
1* cos = 1/3 ---> = cos^-1(1/3) =1.23 radians
b) Refrence angle : = 1.23 rad
a) y = 1*sin = sin(1.23) =0.9428
c) Six trigonometric ratios are :
sin = 0.9428 ;cos = = 0.33 ; tan = 2.819
sec = 3.03 ; csc = 1.06 ; cot =0.3547
