P 53 gene secretes a tumour suppressor protein in eukaryotes. It prevents the damaged, mutated and cancerous cells from multiplying thus safeguarding. It regulates the cell cycle at various point and these are termed as checkpoints. P53 is a protein and is present in all the cells.It is usually not expressed in healthy cells.but when the cell experiences any stress this gene is activated. P53 once activated it stops or arrests the cell cycle at G1(via cyclin-dependant kinases by releasing S-phase promoting factor), G2(via GADD by preventing centrosome amplification) and mitotic spindle checkpoints.
