The motion of molecules only due to their random motion is called diffusion. The factor that controls how fast molecules spread out is; is how crowded (on the molecular level) the system is. Suppose a molecule bumps into another molecule while moving in a straight line and further, if there are more molecules to bump into, the distance travelled will be shorter. Thus in a random walk of a molecule in a gas and a random walk of a protein molecule in water, the distance travelled will be more in case of gas as the molecule will travel faster in a gas than in a liquid, since in gas mostly there is empty space as there are not many molecules for the random walking molecule to run into.
