For the system of capacitors shown in in the following figure find the equivalent capacitance between b and c, and between a and c. (C_1 = 22 pF, C_2 = 2.0 pF, and C3 = 13 pF.)

Solution

The 2 and 13 pF capacitors are in parallel, so the equivalent capacitance between b and c is

Cbc = C2 + C3

= 2 pF + 13 pF

Cbc = 15 pF

The 22 pF capacitor is in series with the equivalent capacitance Cbc, so the equivalent capacitance between a and c is

Cac = (1/22 + 1/15)-1

Cac = 8.92 pF
