The 70-kg cylinder (ICE 1.3 kg m2) shown in Figure 1 has a l-m-long bar with a mass of 20 kg pinned at the center of the cylinder. Determine the acceleration of the center of the cylinder if the system is released from rest. a=2.73 m/s^2

Solution

from equil paralell to plane

70*accln-70*9,81*sin20 =.3 N1 -20*9.81*cos 2.55

N1= normal reaction to plane at rod contact =( 20 cos 17.45 + 70cos 2.55)*9.81

get N1= 829 N approx

substitute in horiz eqn and solve for accl= 2.73 m/s2

(note: rod makes angle 17.45 with the plane , not 20 degm found from the rt angle triangle of radius and rod length.
