1. Drainage systems play an important role in durablity of roads and highway or we can say for greater life span of road/highway , proper drainage system is must.

Objectives: the main objective of placing drainage systems for roads is to stop water ( both rainwater and other percolating water) from entering layers of roads that is , subgrade layer and pavement surface .

b) To prevent road surface from water action which would otherwise have lifted upper bitumen layer of roads .

c) To increase life span of roads/ Highways

d) to reduce flooding od highways in times of natural disasters like tsunami or cloud brusts etc

Importance of Drainage

Excess moisture in soil sub-grade causes instability under the road surface. The pavement may fail due to sub-grade failure. In some clayey soil variation in moisture content causes considerable variation in volume of sub-grade. This sometimes contributes to pavement failure.
