Mitochondria has separate DNA apart from the cell nucleus. It has separate enzymatic machinery for energy production. Energy produced in the form of Adenosine tri phosphate (ATP). This molecule contains high energy phosphate bonds which is used to provide energy to the cell. So a cell cannot survive without mitochondria because it depends on the ATP produced by mitochondria.
