Forest toadstools can be yellow, orange or red. You know the colorations is controlled by a single locus gene. In a population of 254 toadstools, 61 are yellow, 79 are orange, and 114 are red. If you know the red and the yellow alleles are incompletely dominant, calculate the allelic and genotypic frequencies. Make sure you check whether the population is on HW equilibrium for that locus.

Solution

Let the frequency of yellow be Y and Red be R

Allele Y and R will combine to give YY, RR and YR genotype.

From the given data we can get the genotype population

To calculate allele frequency we need to find out total number of allele present in the given population

For each gene, there are two alleles so total allele in given population will be 254*2 i.e. 504

Allele frequency of Yellow allele will be

(Y gene in yellow population + Y gene in orange population)/ Total number of alleles in the population

since yellow population has two Y allele so

(2*61 + 79) /504 = 0.40

Allele frequency of Red allele will be

(R gene in red population + R gene in orange population) / Total number of alleles in the population

since Red population has two R allele so

(2*114 + 79) / 504 = 0.60

Allelic Frequency of yellow gene is 0.40 and red gene is 0.60

Genotype Number of Individual Genotype Frequency
YY 61 61/254 = 0.24
YR 79 79/254 = 0.31
RR 114 114/254= 0.45
Total 254
